This quality in Poes writing can be easily demonstrated by examining three of his works: "Cask of Amontillado," "The Raven, " and "The Tell-Tale Heart." These masterful works demonstrate how Poe considered all aspects of language and narrative in creating the sense of horror and depravity that so often characterizes his work. Setting, for Poe, is often the most disturbing feature of his narrative. In "The Tell-Tale Heart," Poe does not relate a great deal about the house in which the murder takes place, however, for all intents and purposes, the house is not the setting, rather it is the mind of the protagonist that constitutes the "setting" in which the reader "sees" the action take place and the protagonist is quite insane. Therefore, everything in the story is askew, like looking at reality through a fun-house mirror. The protagonist describes how he crept into the old mans room at night and stared at him as he slept, looking to see if his eye, "his Evil Eye," was open -- "it was not the old man that vexed me, but his Evil Eye" (Poes The Tell-Tale Heart). It is by seeing the world through the warped perspective of the protagonist that Poe sets up the terror inherent in the story. The sheer madness of his thought processes are chilling, but also, it is through his eyes that the reader sees the terror of his victim. The protagonist relates that , as he crept up on the old man, he heard a slight groan, "it was the groan of mortal terror" (Poes "The Tell-Tale Heart").
