tale is fascinating, it is also very much an enigma, as Poe does not disclose the exact nature of the curse that plagues the Usher family, nor does he offer
explain plausibly why Roderick Usher did not release his sister from her tomb as soon as he suspected that she lived. Instead of offering overt explanation, Poe includes a poem,
composed by Usher, and entitled "The Haunted Palace." An examination of this poem demonstrates that the poem augments the narrative, expanding on the plot and the characterization. Furthermore, studying the
poem makes it clear that the poem and the story itself are thematically and symbolically inseparable. Beginning with the story, it starts on a "dull, dark, and soundless day
in the autumn of the year, with cloud that "hung oppressively low in the heavens" (Poe 664). The House of Usher is set on the banks of a "black
and lurid tarn" that is surrounded by decaying vegetation (664). Simply being there makes the narrator of the story depressed. The narrator knew Roderick Usher when they were boys, and
the he has recently received a letter from Usher that "admitted of no other than a personal reply" (665). When he arrives his impression of the Usher mansion are symbolic
of the situation inside the house. He relates that "Minute fungi overspread the whole exterior, hanging in a fine tangled web-work from the eaves (666). In side the
house, the atmosphere is equally oppressive. The narrator relates that he felt as if he has breathed "an atmosphere of sorrow" just by walking into the room (666). He finds
