a unique atmosphere of horror and menace through his power of description. In addition, his life was somewhat bizarre, such that we are tempted to see his stories as a
reflection of his personal reality. This paper discusses whether, or to what extent, we can see the actual history of the author in his work. We begin with an analysis
of "The Fall of the House of Usher." "The Fall of the House of Usher" Here are the opening lines of this story: "During the whole of a dull, dark,
and soundless day in the autumn of the year, when the clouds hung oppressively low in the heavens, I had been passing alone, on horseback, through a singularly dreary tract
of country ; and at length found myself, as the shades of the evening drew on, within view of the melancholy House of Usher. I know not how it was
- but, with the first glimpse of the building, a sense of insufferable gloom pervaded my spirit" (Poe). In this short excerpt we see some of the hallmarks of Poes
writing, particularly the alliteration (dull, dark, day, dreary), the isolation, and the sense of decay and menace. Poes narrators are invariably alone and find themselves in situations of great danger;
or they commit murder and allow us to watch, as is the case in "The Tell-Tale Heart." Its always tempting, in a first-person narration, to believe that the narrator
of the story and the author are identical, but we need to guard against this assumption, because it may not be warranted. In order to see if that applies here,
