one could well argue that no one has likely surpassed Poe in his unique writing style, coupled with his unique and difficult life. With this in mind the following paper
examines the life and the works of Edgar Allan Poe. In relationship to works the paper also discusses his contributions to the genre of Romantic poetry. Edgar Allan
Poe: His Life There is some debate as to when Poe was born. He was likely born around 1809 and then in
1810 it is believed that his father died (Liukkonen; Pesonen). His mother then died the following year and Poe, along with two siblings, were left orphaned. "Edgar was taken into
the home of a Richmond merchant John Allan. The remaining children were cared for by others" (Liukkonen; Pesonen). Apparently Poes brother died while he was still young and then his
sister went insane, illustrating that Poe was ultimately born into a family filled with tragedy, and perhaps mental problems as well. His
early years were relatively chaotic, as one would expect. He went to the University of Virginia but was kicked out because of the fact that he had acquired gambling debts.
This then led to his separating himself from John Allan, entering the military, leaving the military, beginning writing, and otherwise moving around and struggling. He was also experiencing his growing
problem with alcohol. There are many who claim, without question, that Poe was an alcoholic. But, there have been some who claim that what he suffered from was a condition
