06E). After having witness his mothers death at the age of three, Poe was orphaned and raised by a Richmond, Virginia family. His foster mother also died when he was
quite young and when his foster father cut off his funds while Poe was attending the University of Virginia, Poe headed north to Boston. He enrolled at West Point and
dropped after a short time and became an editor for a series of magazines while at the same time writing short stories and poems. He married his cousin Virginia when
she was only thirteen and they lived with her mother in basic poverty conditions. When Virginia died of tuberculosis in 1849, Poe died just two years later at the young
age of 40 after a battle with alcohol addiction (Brennan 06E). His works are said to have had an influence on most mystery and horror writers and he became quite
famous posthumously. His works reflect a lifetime of the women in his life dying and loss, and reveal a great sadness of his character which held true the grim realities
of life and death. Poe was considered a pioneer in his quest to ascertain the inner workings of the sinister mind. A good
example of this is the critically acclaimed short story "The Cask of Amontillado". In it, the main narrator, Montresor lures Fortunato down into his wine vaults under the pretence of
