on reality, which blended he macabre into the fabric of the everyday and the commonplace. Poe was born in Boston on January 19, 1809 an English actress Elizabeth
Hopkins, and David Poe, an Irish actor (Edgar...Shadow). Poes father deserted his wife and three children (Poe had an elder brother, William Henry, and a sister, Rosalie) when Edgar was
only a baby. Three years later, his mother passed away, which marked on of many tragedies that would haunt Poes life (Edgar...Shadow). Poe then had the good fortune that
he and his siblings were adopted by John Allan, a wealthy tobacco exporter from Richmond, Virginia, and his wife, Frances; but, in a patter that persisted his entire life, bad
accompanied the good and Poe never got along with his adoptive father. On the other hand, the wealth of the Allans allowed Poe to be educated at a boarding
school in London, and also at a private school and academy in Richmond and then later at the University of Virginia (Edgar...Shadow). But while Poe had the opportunity for a
good education, he was dismissed after just one year at the university because of his drinking and gambling (Edgar...Shadow). Back in Richmond, Poe wrote his first "serious" poem, Tamerlane, which
later became his first published work, and concerns the marriage of a woman that Poe loved (Edgar...Shadow). In the poem, Poe addresses his father and explains the effect that
