first argument is the one where it is claimed that the death penalty is barbaric. Koch (1985) claims that while the ways in which murderers are put to death is
not pleasant, that does not mean that it is barbaric. After some discussion, Koch (1985) writes: "So its not the method that really troubles opponents. Its the death itself they
consider barbaric" (p.13). In truth, the argument that the death penalty is barbaric is something said off the cuff and not taken literally. Generally, the argument suggests that putting someone
to death is old fashioned. People in contemporary society do not stoop to this level. The argument is really that society is beyond such a thing. The argument is
a good one. One would think that in this day and age, people would come up with a better way to ameliorate problems of justice. That said, it almost seems
as if Koch understands the question. Yes, it is the death that people object to, but the fact that they say it is barbaric seems to also suggest that it
is a negative way of doing things. Koch does bring up some good points. There are opponents who do bring up the fact that certain methods are barbaric and it
is true, as Koch (1985) points out that the injection had been substituted. Yet, Koch (1985) cites a New York Times article which looks at the lethal injection method, and
suggests it is a ploy to sanitize the process. It is with this remark Koch takes issue. In some way, Kochs point is not well taken. It is unfair to
argue with this position categorically when it is only one New York Times critic who presents the issue in such a manner. The second argument is that no major
