Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), more commonly known as ecstasy, is one of the more popular party drugs because of the favorable feelings it induces, the result of a change of the brain's neurotransmitter serotonin that controls mood. Ecstasy produces a false sense of peacefulness that compels users to interact with one another in a markedly tolerant and accepting fashion known as empathogenesis; the longing to convey love and be in the company of beauty - technically termed entactogenesis - has served to label ecstasy as the 'hug drug.'
