million (Zarrella, 2004). From the perspective of the tourist at least vacations are associated with entertainment, recreation, and relaxation. Tourism, however, impacts not just the tourist but also
the area toured. Both economy and culture can be affected by tourism. These impacts can be both positive and negative. Sometimes, in fact, tourism in a particular
area can be embroiled in controversy. A recent trend in tourism illustrates this contention all too well. That trend encompasses ecotourism and archaeotourism.
Cultural and archaeological resources as well as environmental resources around the globe are faced with the daily struggle for survival. Many are in the process of
being destroyed by the poverty-ridden communities whose inhabitants live on their outskirts. Some are destroyed for their artifacts or to obtain any natural resources which they might contain, others are
destroyed in the name of development. Ecotourism and archaeotourism have sprang up with the recognition that some areas of the world
are in dire need of protection but have few resources to expend towards that protection. Between 1994 and 2004 this type of tourism grew one hundred percent (Zarrella, 2004).
In contrast to recreation based tourism that is geared primarily towards the interest of the vacationer, ecotourism and archaeotourism are designed in theory to benefit not just the tourist
