They also share the same issues which arise while they are trying to build an industrialized sector and promote agriculture. At the same time, they are dealing with more and more of their population moving into the cities. They are all trying to deal with these problems while maintaining some political order and build a military entity. These problems occur in all developing countries, but in the Middle East there is a difference based on the human and material resources available to the twenty-three countries in the region. BACKGROUND For nearly thirty years, the peasants and working class that make up the citizenry of the Middle East have been undergoing social reorganization at the same time that their political structure is being reconfigured. The nature of these processes is a part of the transition from economic nationalism, industrially biased development and politics which have been moving the countries towards assimilation into the global economy. Becoming a part of the global economy will encourage private enterprise and the redistribution of the national wealth. Although the motivation, extent and economic and political consequences of this transition have not been even, the trend is apparent across the entire region. POLITICAL CHANGES One of the major changes which occurred in the economics and politics of the region happened during the 1950s to the 1970s (Beinin, 1999). It was during this time that state-led development and import-substituion industrialization became key component of the social policies of the day (Beinin, 1999).
