For many Native American groups there have been numerous economic changes in recent years. The Morongo and Viejas Tribes of Southern
California are an excellent example of these changes. These tribes went from being the poorest people in the state to the richest in just a couple of decades. Within
that same time period they transitioned from being practically invisible in a political sense to being the most powerful political lobby in the state.
The accomplishments made by the Morongo and the Viejas are particularly noteworthy when we consider that California is the sixth largest economy in the world! Although the
economic tactics employed by these groups have been diverse, the cornerstone of those tactics has been gaming. Although controversial, gaming has opened many possibilities for Native Americans that chose
to pursue that option. This is true both in California and elsewhere. Gambling casinos on Native American lands present an interesting impact
to the U.S. economic system. These casinos are based on the market system, that is they thrive only because there is a demand for their services. The Native
Americans that own these casinos and work in them benefit economically and socially as the generated funds are turned towards improving the standard of living for the Native Americans themselves.
The money from gaming has gone toward opening various businesses and making infrastructural improvements that not only complement the casinos but
that are valuable in their contributions to Native life in general. In 1997 the Morongo, for example, opened a Shell gasoline station (one of the largest in the country)
