rationalism is "The doctrine or system of those who deduce their religious opinions from reason or the understanding, as distinct from, or opposed to, revelation" (Definition of Rationalism). Rationalism
directly opposes "sensualism, or sensationalism, and empiricism" (Definition of Rationalism). Lake (2002) writes that rationalism can help to bring understanding to governmental response to terrorist acts, given that national
interest failed with Vietnam; "The oil shocks of the 1970s created a whole new subfield of international political economy" (Lake 26); and the Cold War gave rise to alternative approaches
to international studies (Lake 26). Though the rationalist approach cannot answer all questions, Lake (2002) believes that it can provide a framework within which true thinkers can intuitively arrive
at some answers or at least some insight. It certainly is an approach that is exponentially more reasonable than the governments current view of any conservative as a dangerous
extremist that must be closely watched (North). Rationalism There is rationalism on one hand, and empiricism on the other. The idea that reason
and logic supersede all is a practical view, but reasoning can be faulty. Everyone knows examples like this where someone reasonably draws a conclusion that is factually inaccurate. Still, reason
to some extent is better than experience which is always subjective. In tackling the problem of which school of thought is correct, it pays to look at rationalism as it
