economic issues in presidential elections have demonstrated a particular importance. A student writing on this subject will want to ask, which money issues did crop up between 1880 and 1904?
Which things were not considered important? During the campaign of 1880, both candidates opposed government aid for Catholic schools (Boller, 1984). Also, Weaver suggested a graduated income tax as
well as important changes in the way in which work was implemented (1984). Weaver proposed an eight hour work day and the end of child labor in the United States
(1984). Interestingly, it would not be until 1904 that the National Child Labor committee would be formed (Miller & Faux, 1997). In the year 1880, Weaver did not win. Garfield
would win the presidency, but some claimed that bribes were involved in his political games. It was alleged that Garfield accepted bribes from an organization; however, he claimed that the
money was just a loan (Boller, 1984). In any event, Garfield was assassinated soon after taking office (1984). While many campaigns center around monetary issues, there are often other issues
such as those that concern social and moral well being. Today, hot campaign topics include things like gay marriage and abortion. This is not unusual. However, the campaign of 1888
seemed to be somewhat out of the ordinary. It did focus on one issue, which was "the tariff" (Boller, 1984, p. 157). This election was not unlike elections in recent
