which started life as Coccium; a Roman settlement and was renamed Wigan by the Vikings, has undergone a great deal of economic change leading to his current size and importance
(Wigan Council, 2008). The area was important during the industrial revolution being a main supplier of cotton and coal to the northwest, but in recent years as the industrial output
of the United Kingdom has declined, Wigan has faced a number of challenges. Like any town within the United Kingdom the national economic issues are very relevant, but any local
economy will not only be influenced by national events, local influences and circumstances can also have a major impact on the economic conditions of the area.
Wigan has suffered as a result of the downturn, but has also seen a major turnaround. The development of tourism and leisure facilities and services in the
area has helped the economy, and continues to do so. If we consider that nostalgia is a desire or longing for the past the we see this depicted in the
project and tourist attraction known as The Wigan Pier Experience. The eight and a half acre site is pure nostalgia, looking at life in Victorian Wigan, complete with the social
problems as well as the economic realities. Although this type of project has taken place in many other areas in terms of regeneration, it is not to the only type
of project that has been successful, more recently and ongoing there is the Wigan Mill development which has already seen 252 apartment on the former site of the TrencherFeild Mill
and will soon see the development and opening up of commercial units, including retail and restaurant facilities and plans for a hotel and bar (Wigan Council, 2008).
