Initiated on January 1, 1994, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is the worlds largest contemporary free trade area both in terms of territory and in terms of gross national product (Pastor, 2006). An agreement between the United States, Canada, and Mexico, NAFTA facilitates trade across the borders of the member countries. NAFTA has had a significant impact on the passage of industrial and agricultural products across the borders. The agreement is surrounded by misperceptions and controversy, however. While some argue that it has been tremendously positive from an economic sense, others argue that it has been an economic disaster. The criticism surrounding NAFTA extends back well before its initiation. Prior to its implementation past presidential candidate Ross Perot, for example, warned during the presidential candidate debates of 1992 that Americans would hear "a giant sucking sound going south" if NAFTA was passed. Even six years after its passage criticism abounded. Magnusson (2000), for example, contended that it was: "a package of misleading promises sold to an unsuspecting Congress by a cynical band of White House operatives and mendacious business lobbyists" Those that support NAFTA argue that although NAFTA is surrounded by many misperceptions as well as by considerable controversy, it has been overwhelmingly successful for the economy as well as many of the social aspects of the U.S. and the other countries which are involved.
