Of course, the U.S. is trying to help Iraq with social policy, and training their people, so that their economy can thrive. Thus far, things are not so good, but
this is really not the fault of the U.S. Rather, it is the legacy of a corrupt regime. By the time U.S. troops would invade Iraq, its economy was
only a shell of what it had been fifteen years prior (Dickey, 2007). It was upon invasion that things became worse, at least at first, as Kurdish and Shia leaders
began to form relationships with those in Washington and Saddam would begin to gain Sunni support (Dickey, 2007). The Shia would become poorer than they had been and the culture
had become more corrupt (Dickey, 2007). Dickey (2007) points out that Bush opposed Hussein and assumed that the Iraqis wanted freedom, such as those that Americans have, while not considering
that the people do not even know what freedom means. They had been under totalitarian rule for some time (Dickey, 2007). The author writes: "Here, then, is the tragedy of
Americas involvement in Iraq, now and in the future: what Saddam achieved for his country came at a terrible cost, and of the countless problems he created and perpetuated, his
death solves none" (p.18). He makes a good point. Despite the fall of Saddam Hussein, the Iraqis would face serious economic problems. The regime change does not result in an
instant solution to problems faced by Iraq for dozens of years. When Baghdad fell, and the hunt for Saddam was on, things did change. Things were in disarray. The U.S.
government would help the people to rebuild their lives. At least, they were and are still being guided. Troops have worked to secure neighborhoods in the region and build up
