This 3 page research paper, first of all relates the main tenet of Dollard's frustration-aggression theory for explaining racism, as this theory describes how people displace their frustration over such things as economic problems onto weaker ethnic/racial groups. This discussion is offered in reference to the questions: Are the frustrations of many Americans being unfairly displaced toward certain racial and ethnic groups? Or, have other social groups become the primary targets? their frustration over economic hardship onto Jews, reasoning that they were somehow responsible for Germanys problems (Kerbo, 2009). Considering that the current state of the US economy is abysmal with
unemployment, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), hovering around 9 percent, a pertinent question to ask is: Are the frustrations of many Americans being unfairly displaced toward certain
racial and ethnic groups? Or, have other social groups become the primary targets? Historically, Americans have focused on groups of immigrants. For example, numerous laws were passed in the
late nineteenth century that excluded Chinese immigrants from becoming naturalized American citizens and strictly regulated immigration. Similarly, recently, American economic frustration has been directed toward illegal Mexican immigrants, as evidenced
by the controversial Arizona law that mandates that police officers check the immigration status of anyone suspected of being an illegal immigrant, which can be regarded as legalizing racial profiling.
As this suggests, the experience of being an American immigrant often includes "traumatic confrontation" with authority figures (Portes and Zhou, 2007, p. 209). However, the question remains as to
whether or not immigrant, racial or ethnic groups are the current focus of displaced economic frustration and the current headlines suggest that they are not. Rather than focusing on racial
