According to Dixon-Mueller (1993) the relationship between womens employment and fertility is "elusive and ambiguous". It can be speculate that in some situations womens employment
might be likely to result in greater sexual and reproductive choice. This contention can be demonstrated with a look at microcredit programs, programs which are designed to give women
an economic leg-up in the world of business. Sometimes such programs, however, have unexpected results, results which could serve more as a detriment than as a benefit to womens
reproductive choice and health. Microcredit programs are an important component of World Bank activities. These programs allow some of the worlds poorest
women the credit which is needed to establish businesses and to move outside the societal expectations that have for so long held them cultural captives. Even women who have
no physical collateral can receive microcredit and this microcredit can translate into phenomenal changes in these womens lives. The same factors which resulted in women not working in economically
profitable ventures could be said to directly relate to the reproductive choices they made. Microcredit is most often viewed as turning those factors upside down.
Microcredit has been found in at least one study to have more positive impact in terms of reducing poverty when extended to women as opposed to men
(WorldBank.org, 1998). Under some scenarios the employment which results from microcredit programs has the potential to lead to greater sexual and reproductive choice. The relationship that exists between
women entering the business world, reproduction, and empowerment in general, however, is very complex. For some women that relationship may be positive but for others it may be negative.
