Studies of the connection between domestic violence and a lack of financial security for battered women was the impetus for the study and the findings are related in terms of measures of financial knowledge and financial self-efficacy. Brief Description of the Study The study outlined by Sanders, Weaver and Schnabel (2007) is based on quasi-experimental design conducted in 2001. The experiment focused on the introduction of an economic curriculum as part of the services provided for participant women in battered womens shelters and a comparison-group approach was utilized to determine variations based on the presence or absence of the curriculum in the shelter setting. The participants in the study were women over the age of 18, who did not demonstrate overt symptoms of mental illness or cognitive impairment, and who residents of participating shelters. The sample utilized a pretest/posttest approach and the comparison of groups participating in economic curriculum and those in shelters where the curriculum is not offered. The researchers had to take into consideration the fact that attrition rates at the shelters were high and so program participation attrition rates also had to be taken into account as a part of the study. In the pretest data collection, 64 experimental and 53 comparison group participants were identified. In the posttest data collection, 32 experimental group and 35 comparison group participants were assessed. Individuals participated either in an economic curriculum and in an evaluation of their understanding of economic principles and data was coded with study identification numbers.
