continued to the ASEAN-4 which are Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand in addition to mainland China since the 1980s (1997). While the success is positive, it is also
bittersweet. The fall of the baht in 1997 represented the start of an economic crisis in Asia, one so strong it was felt all the way from Thailand to Japan.
Indeed, while many of these little countries were growing, the financial fall would have an effect on many of these and in some case, reverse the initial inklings of success.
While one can say in a general sense, that there has been a great deal of progress in the region, fundamental questions linger. Parts of the Western Pacific Rim have
