economies quickly, if in fact thats possible. History of the Middle East The Middle East is an ancient region, with a history of various civilizations that goes back
5,000 years and includes the Sumerians, Babylonians, Assyrians and others; Mesopotamia was first settled around 2400 B.C. (History of the Middle East, 2005). The Roman Empire expanded to include
the entire area, and by the 5th century the Middle East, along with most of Europe, as well as North Africa, was a "single political and economic unit" (History, 2005).
This unity worked to help spread a new faith, and "by the 5th century the whole region was Christian" (History, 2005). Roman rule gave way to the Byzantine Empire
while in the east the Persian Empire rose; the two warred for centuries and the region was ruled at times by Persia and at others by the Byzantine Empire (History,
2005). There was no real distinction between Europe and the Middle East at the time, since many of the countries were Christian and Greek-speaking, and were "united culturally and
politically with the Greco-Roman world under the rule of Constantinople" (History, 2005). The situation didnt change until the 7th century AD, and the rise of Islam (History, 2005). From
637 to 642 AD, the followers of Muhammad occupied Palestine, Mesopotamia, Syria, Egypt and Persia (History, 2005) Most of the people in the conquered territories converted to Islam "within
