Bangkok August 8, 1967; the five original member countries were "Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand" (Overview, 2006). Other countries joined later: Brunei Darussalam in 1984; Vietnam in 1995; Myanmar
and Laos PDR in 1997, and Cambodia in 1999 (Overview, 2006). The ASEAN region "has a population of about 500 million, a total area of 4.5 million square kilometers, a
combined gross domestic product of almost US$ 700 billion, and a total trade of about US$ 850 billion" (Overview, 1995). The objectives behind the creation of this organization were twofold:
"(1) to accelerate economic growth, social progress and cultural development in the region and (2) to promote regional peace and stability through abiding respect for justice and the rule of
law in the relationship among countries in the region and adherence to the principles of the United Nations Charter" (Overview, 2006). The ASEAN community has three "pillars"-security, economics and socio-cultural
(Overview, 2006). The fundamental principles of the organization are "mutual respect for the independence, sovereignty, equality, territorial integrity, and national identity of all nations"; the right of each nation to
lead its own life "free from external interference, subversion or coercion"; that member states do not interfere in the internal affairs of others; members states resolve differences peacefully; that member
