question, some background information is relevant. First, the Asian financial crisis took place during the 1990s. It would begin in Thailand, but then spread to other Asian nations like the
Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia ("Timeline of the Panic," 2008). By the autumn of 1997, the financial crisis would affect China too ("Timeline of the Panic," 2008). It is
important to keep this change in mind when exploring the relevance of Chinas economic zones. The history of the economic zones starts more than a decade prior to the free
fall that occurred in Thailand in 1997. Since 1980, China had established special economic zones in places like Shenzhen and Zhuhai as well as Shantou in Guangdong Province ("Special Economic
Zones," 2008). There were other zones created as well. In 1984, China had also opened fourteen cities located on the coastline to overseas investment ("Special Economic Zones," 2008).
During 1985, the state decided that it would expand further to the open coastal areas, and as a result, several cities were made into an open coastal belt ("Special Economic
Zones," 2008). Since 1992, the State Council opened several border cities, and it also opened all the capital cities of inland provinces in addition
to the autonomous regions ("Special Economic Zones," 2008). Fifteen free trade zones and thirty-two economic and technological development zones in addition to high-tech industrial zones had been established in several
cities ("Special Economic Zones," 2008). Due to this scenario, there had been much integration in the coastal areas, which borders the river ("Special Economic Zones," 2008). The role
