fresh water. The Lakes influence the weather in the area, and have created unique ecosystems. This paper examines some of the plants, animals and organisms found in the
region. The Region There are a vast number of plants and animals on the planet, but not all species are found in every location. Flora and fauna are found
where they have been able to adapt to the prevailing climatic conditions (Biomes, 2005). When a number of plants and animals adapt to the same conditions and remain together
in the region, they form an "interdependent group called an ecological community" (Biomes, 2005). Further, a "distinct ecological community of plants and animals living together in a particular climate
is called a biome" (Biomes, 2005). Biomes include the desert, rainforest, and tundra (Biomes, 2005). Columbus, Ohio, lies in the mid-latitude deciduous forest biome, which "is located between
the polar regions and the tropics (Deciduous forest, 2004). The climate here is influenced by both the warm tropics and the cold polar region, which means that the area
has both a warm and cold season (Deciduous forest, 2004). Rainfall is fairly even throughout the year (there are no "rainy" or "dry" seasons); and average rainfall "ranges for
30 to 60 inches" (Deciduous forest, 2004). There are some evergreens here, but most trees lose their leaves in the winter, providing rich nutrients for the soil on the
forest floor (Deciduous forest, 2004). There is a wide variety of animals in the deciduous forest, including "bears, raccoons, squirrels, skunks, wood mice and ... deer" (Deciduous forest: animals, 2004).
In the past, this biome also included predators such as mountain lions and coyotes, but most have been killed by humans, who see them as a threat (Deciduous forest:
