According to the Centers for Disease Control, fecal contamination in Floridas Apalachicola Bay has been responsible for the spread of viral gastroenteritis in those who have eaten oysters caught from this polluted body of water; the overbearing presence of bodily waste and toxic chemicals has created a health hazard for people who choose to eat the food that comes from the bay. As one of the countrys "most thoroughly studied natural systems" (FICUS, 1999), the Apalachicola Bay has provided researchers with a great deal of information regarding what occurs when sewage treatment projects are inadequate at removing bodily waste and toxic chemical product from the environment. A significant part of the problem stems from the fact that polluted water flows directly into the Apalachicola Bay from other sources, rendering the bay defenseless from the start. The Chattahoochee is one such contaminate source that brings with it waters rife with heavy metals from industrial waste, fecal coliform bacteria from chicken farm waste and a variety of other pollutants. Scientists claim that the muddy sediment on the bottom of the bay is particularly contaminated from toxic substances that will remain in the soil for many future decades. Current EPA findings indicate that even the most sophisticated of all treatment processes might not be effective enough to rid the water of such a concentrated level of toxins (Seabrook, 1998). Despite the obvious contamination from an inadequate sewage treatment program, there were no official public health studies conducted as of 1995 to determine just how dangerous it is for people to eat products from the Apalachicola Bay.
