forms and manifestations. One of these manifestations is the way a culture views and interacts in the natural world. There is a popular perception, for example, that Native
Americans can be characterized by a certain ecological world view while non-Native Americans (particularly white mainstream Americans) can be characterized by just the opposite ecological world view. If this
is indeed the case, these world views in terms of ecology could be considered consistent cultural artifacts. When considering such perceptions from either
an anthropological or sociological perspective it is critical that we recognize that both Native Americans and mainstream white Americans are in actuality tremendously diverse categories. As a consequence of this
diversity there is not only a diversity of ecological world views which exist side by side among both Native American people and mainstream white Americans but, in many cases, these
views have changed considerably over time. Never-the-less, with careful analysis, it also becomes apparent that there have been differences in the way Native Americans relate to their
environment throughout history when compared to the way those of European origins relate to theirs. These differences, in fact, are persistent cultural artifacts.
Many have contended since the original "discovery" of this country that Native American spirituality is inherently tied to their interrelationship with the environment in which they exist and results
in a sort of critical balance between need and supply. This contention goes on to suggest that in most cases this relationship results in a deep respect for that
