an integral part of this plan. One of the areas of ecclesiology that scripture clearly addresses are the qualifications for the position of elder and what this position entails.
Pigg (1998) argues that one of the first qualifications for elder that a man should possess is that he should desire the position. He points out that Paul states in
1 Timothy 3:1 that "This is a true saying. If a man desire the office of bishop, he desireth a good work." While the verse refers to "bishop," it seems
logical that the same sentiment would apply to the post of "elder" as well. While not stated overtly, the clear implication is that the individual in question should desire to
become an elder, i.e., that coercion should never be employed in obtaining candidates for the role of elder -- "One must serve willingly" (Pigg, 1998). In the First Letter
