(Kirkland and Jackson, 2009). The situation is further complicated by gender and economic considerations and whether or not an individual is striving to be fully acculturated into the dominant
culture or actually resisting such acculturation (Kirkland and Jackson, 2009). We can see just these types of problems in certain segments of the black population of the US and
the development of ebonics as a communication style. The term "ebonics" was coined by linguist Robert L. Williams in 1975 by combining the words ebony and phonics (Gadsden and Harris,
2009). It is a linguistic phenomenon which is shared by blacks in the U.S. and the Caribbean alike. Ebonics has invoked considerable controversy in the last few years,
in fact it has resulted in widespread criticism particularly among teachers who question its validity as a language (Gadsden and Harris, 2009). While the expectation might be that
blacks in general would be supportive of that communication style we are now referring to as ebonics, that is not necessarily the case. The issues of the acceptability of
ebonics has torn our nation apart both along black and white lines of demarcation and also within the black community itself. Never-the-less, ebonics is becoming a more and more
common component of many diverse aspects of our society. Ebonics has infiltrated everything from television and radio commercials to magazine and newspaper ads. The degree
