allowing the audience insight into the motivations of the characters. This is particularly evidenced in Othello, Hamlet and Measure for Measure. These plays provide a dramatic account of
how Shakespeare employed the use of eavesdropping and spying as literary techniques to enhance the overall drama of these stories. In
Othello, the first instance of eavesdropping is when Iago listens in as Roderigo tells Brabantio of the situation between his daughter and Othello. Clearly, Brabantio doesnt know that Iago
is listening to the conversation, but because the audience is aware of this it immediately becomes evident that he is a traitor to Othello. Soon after this, Iago goes
to Othello and tells him of Roderigos betrayal. Clearly, the fact that the audience has prior knowledge of Iagos eavesdropping allows the audience to realize from the beginning the
true nature of Iago. In this way, Shakespeare is effectively allowing the audience to have insight into the real nature of this character in order that they may make
better judgments about him throughout the play. The fact that the audience knows the backstabbing nature of Iago makes many scenes very poignant, since his attempts at sincerity are
readily recognized as nothing more than lies. In the story Measure for Measure, Shakespeare employs the use of spying/eavesdropping when Isabelle
comes to the jail to talk to her brother, Claudio. Prior to her arrival, the Duke had dressed up as a friar and had gone to talk to Claudio,
