be associated with eating, the specific relationships that are described in this passage and how these values compare to the those of the present era. The different values associated with
eating are also compared in regards to the various groups of people and individuals mentioned in the passage. In so doing, the overriding research questions for this investigation was to
determine how eating a meal with Jesus was different valued from eating a meal with Herod or one of the Pharisees and what specifically, did Jesus mean by warning his
disciples against the leaven of the Pharisees. Eating relationships and values The consumption of food is necessary for survival. However, beyond this physical fact, food carries with it emotional
and social connotations that are highly evident within any society during any era in history or in the present, as these connotations are inherent to the ways that human beings
relate to each other. These relationships begin at birth are grounded in the satisfaction of infants as they are nurtured by their mothers or other caregivers. As the baby gains
nourishment, either from the mothers breast or from a bottle, the infant associates the satiation of hunger with the emotions felt towards the caregiver. Considering the importance of consistent, loving,
nurturing during infancy to human survival, it is not surprising that the act of eating retains symbolic social associations throughout life. When families or any associated group of individuals
