many suggest that society is to blame for it all. There is a tendency for media to promote thinness. The appeal of Twiggy and Calista Flockhart is somewhat of an
obsession to women who have curves and a bit of fat to conquer. Some women take not eating to an extreme. Others eat too much and use food as a
pacifier, much like smokers use cigarettes and alcoholics use wine. When delving into eating disorders, Jungian archetypes are quite relevant, and may be used in understanding the problem.
The concept of archetype is an important correlate to the idea of the collective unconscious, as it demonstrates the existence of definite forms in the psyche that are
present everywhere and always (Jung, 1981). In mythology, they are called motifs and in psychology they may be thought of as representation collectives (1981). No matter what one calls them,
to Jung, the archetype is a pre-existent form that never stands alone (1981). Jung therefore believes that in addition to the immediate consciousness, there is a second psychic system of
a universal consciousness identical in all people (1981). It does not develop individually but rather has inherited pre-existent forms and so the archetypes can only become conscious secondarily (1981). The
archetype is merely an example of a perfect form or prototype (Lohff, 2000) Finally, there are certain psychic contents to this (Jung, 1981). This universal conscious has been seen by
Jung as the beginning for an individual, and so the goal of personality development is the individuation of a person from the common ground he or she begins from, to
