characterized more by silence than it is by discussion. This is particularly true of some health issues that pertain to men. While issues surrounding womens health are often
characterized by the potential for public debate and discussion, the subject of mens health arises in the public arena much less frequently. The predominant tendency for silence within the
male population is in itself the major area of concern in the area of male health. The purpose of this paper is twofold. First it will encourage such
discussion in regard to one specific threat to male health that, when coupled with the male tendency toward silence, can actually be life threatening. That threat is eating disorders.
Information will be provided that is suitable for inclusion in an educational flyer will be provided. Following a presentation on the facts surrounding eating disorders, the question of why
men are less likely to seek public attention about male health concerns such as eating disorders (or even to talk to doctors regarding them) will be addressed.
Male Eating Disorders Although the subject of eating disorders are quite
well publicized when it comes to girls and women being affected, a little appreciated fact is that males too are at risk for eating disorders. Furthermore, the effects of
those eating disorders are just as devastating when they affect males as when they affect females. While the statistics would suggest that males are much less at risk for
eating disorders, these statistics might be more a reflection of the fact that males are not as apt to talk about such problems as are females.
