rock reaches its elastic limit, and breaks" (USGS, 2005). From this we can also see that plates are just that, plates of huge rock that move independently of one
another, coming into contact at times and thus causing quakes. In addition, we can also see that a fault if a weakness in the plate. If we imagine a real
plate, a dinner plate, we can envision a hairline crack that is all but invisible. If that plate bumps into some other solid object, another plate, it will break or
cause a deeper crack. There is also the transform boundary to be considered when speaking of earthquakes. When we have two plates that are sliding, horizontally, by each other
the space between the two is called a "transform-fault boundary, or simply a transform boundary...Most transform faults are found on the ocean floor" (USGS, 2005). The result of the boundary
is more often than not shallow earthquakes (USGS, 2005). Hawaii Hawaii is home to a kind of volcano called shield volcanoes. The following presents us with a
brief understanding of what is involved in these types of volcanoes: "Shield volcanoes are formed by a very liquid lava rock. This rock rises easily in the center of the
volcano and pours out onto the surface without much resistance. A shield volcano usually erupts often with small amounts of mud, lava, ash, and gas. The volcanoes in Hawaii are
examples of shield volcanoes" (Volcanoes Just for Kids!, 2005). Most people associate volcanoes with a particular shape, the shape perhaps of a tall pointed mountain like Mt. St. Helens.
