The USGS provides a list of the most destructive earthquakes that have ever been recorded. The most recent earthquakes it has
on its "most destructive list" are the 2010 Haiti earthquake that killed 222,570 people and the 2008 earthquake that hit Eastern Sichuan China and killed 87,587 people. The Haiti
earthquake registered 7.0 on the Richter Scale and the Sichuan earthquake registered 7.9. In comparison, the earthquake that hit Japan March 21, 2011 registered 9.0 on the Richter scale.
That earthquake will undoubtedly eventually be included on the USGSs most destructive list. Presently, however, it is not because final estimates as to the number dead
have yet to be made. Scientists use a variety of tools to sense the earths rumblings. Seismometers are the most important
of these tools. These tools are used to produce seismographs, graphical depictions of the tremors. Global Positioning System satellites are important in helping scientists visualize how the earth
has been affected and strainmeters are used to record almost even molecular movement (Silva, 2005). Computers are then used to analyze the data that are produced and to
