scientists are still discovering new things about earthquakes all the time. As one author notes, in relationship to one aspect of earthquakes, "Scientists now have a fairly good understanding of
how the plates move and how such movements relate to earthquake activity" which indicates there is still more to learn (USGS [1], 1999). . With that in mind the following
paper examines various aspects of earthquakes. Earthquakes First of all there are apparently four different types of plate boundaries. The USGS ([1] 1999) states offers the following description:
* Divergent boundaries -- where new crust is generated as the plates pull away from each other. * Convergent boundaries -- where crust is destroyed as one plate
dives under another. * Transform boundaries -- where crust is neither produced nor destroyed as the plates slide horizontally past each other. * Plate boundary zones -- broad
belts in which boundaries are not well defined and the effects of plate interaction are unclear. In relationship to the divergent boundaries
it is noted that when these plates move away from one another, which causes an earthquake, magma will come up and fill up that space (USGS [1], 1999). "Perhaps the
best known of the divergent boundaries is the Mid-Atlantic Ridge" which is a submerged mountain range that gores from the Artic Ocean down to Africa (USGS [1], 1999).
Convergent boundaries involve the scientific truth that the earth has not changed its size in the billions of years it has been forming (USGS
[1], 1999). One can assume that part of this relates to the divergent boundaries as new formations occur, and also with convergent boundaries where plates move under one another and
