The planet is constantly shifting, pushing against itself in many regions, and essentially changing every single minute. Many people believe that there has perhaps been more earthquake activity in the past century than in previous centuries. The truth, however, is that there are always earthquakes taking place and some regions that are not active now were quite active a century ago. The following paper looks at earthquake activity in the United States during the 20th century and during the 19th century. The paper illustrates that the activity is likely no more in the 20th century, but that better equipment to study earthquakes allows us to see more activity. Earthquakes: 19th Century More often than not people associate earthquakes in the United States with California, and primarily in the Los Angeles and San Francisco area. However, first off, we discuss the lesser know regions where earthquake activity has been seen or recorded during the 19th century. According to one set of records "There has been persistent seismic activity in the Illinois Basin in southern Illinois and Indiana, with M > 5.0 earthquakes in 1895.. Four other M > 5.0 CUS historical earthquakes have occurred: in Kansas in 1867, in Nebraska in 1877, in Oklahoma in 1882" (Bakun; Hopper). The Northern East coast has also experienced various earthquakes throughout the centuries. The New England area has experienced many earthquakes, predominantly in the 19th century. Many of these earthquakes, however, may well be attributed to a site perhaps more located in Canada. We note some of this information in the following: "1817 event was for many years assigned to a central Maine location, but a study of newspaper and journal accounts..identifies this as another Passamaquoddy Bay earthquake.
