The disease is potentially fatal. Fortunately, however, in many cases it can be prevented or, if detected early enough, effectively treated. The thesis can be presented that because age, smoking, alcohol intake, poor diet, red meat, and family history of colon cancer are risk factors for colorectal cancer, one can identify the population that needs early screening and expend more effort towards educating them about the importance of early screening. Early screening is imperative in preventing colorectal cancer, effectively treating existing cases, diminishing suffering, and saving lives. Colorectal cancer is responsible for one-third of all cancer deaths (American Cancer Society 1). Colorectal cancer typically develops from polyps that are, at first at least, non-cancerous. Removing these polyps removes the possibility of them turning cancerous (American Cancer Society 1). Early screening is also critical because even when polyps have turned cancerous, in the early stages of the disease they can be more easily removed and treated (American Cancer Society 1).
