Using these demarcations, the following personal perspective on early, middle and late adulthood relies primarily on the writers observations and experience. In young adulthood, according to Erikson, the main emphasis is on achieving separation from parents and finding intimacy with a partner as an adult (Young Adult). Erikson marks the beginning of being an adult at 16, which has legitimacy if one looks at being an adult from a purely physical point of view. Certainly, in previous eras, adolescents frequently married at 16 and began their adult lives. However, in Western society, 16 is still considered socially and legally to be a child. Therefore, I would place the lower age limit on adulthood at 18, when one is no longer considered to be a minor. However, this definition of adulthood also seems to be changing, as many parents do not seem to consider their children to be adults until they are financially independent, which may not come until well into the their 20s. However, as Erikson points out, one is generally considered to be "young" until their late 30s. In this early stage of adulthood, good health is taken for granted. An active body and mind is just part of life and accepted as a background condition. Again, as Erikson asserts, the focus of attention is on relationships, finding that special someone with whom one can have a family and build a life. Also, young adults are concerned, first of all, with education, and then with obtaining a good job and building a career. Children generally come along sometime in the 20s or 30s and from then on, life moves into "fast forward" as it focuses on well-baby appointments, soccer ...
