Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 16 page paper. Historically, it has been believed that early oral feeding following colon rectal surgery is not possible. Instead, the traditional protocol is to withhold oral feeding until the resolution of ileus. These beliefs are based on practices that are more than 100 years old. Science has come a long way since then. This essay reviews five separate journal articles that report outcomes and results of early feeding protocols, including one that presented a review of the literature. In each case, early feeding was consistently shown to be safe and beneficial. The writer also comments on the implementation of postoperative early feeding. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

need to discuss your contacts with "two medical centers or community settings" that provided insight into this issue.] The issue to be discussed is early feeding following colon rectal
surgery. Historically, it has been believed that early oral feeding following colon rectal surgery is not possible. Instead, the traditional protocol is to withhold oral feeding until the resolution of
ileus. These beliefs are based on practices that are more than 100 years old. Science has come a long way since then. There are more advanced procedures as well as
better chemicals for anesthesia. Much of the nausea and vomiting of olden days was most likely the result of ether and other old forms of anesthetics. The old practices
kept patients in the hospital for a week or longer and off food for two or three days. Long hospital stays, besides being expensive, are depressing for patients and stressful
for loved ones. Any process, procedure or practice that can help patients recover more quickly with less morbidity and fewer complications is worth investigating and, when shown to be feasible,
adopted as standard practice. It is rather absurd to be holding onto beliefs based on science of a century ago. As the following review will demonstrate, there are very positive
effects for patients who have elective colon rectal surgeries who are fed early after surgery. Early means first liquid given from several hours postoperative to within one day, which is
followed by a regular diet as the patient can tolerate it. Traditionally, feeding has waited until spontaneous bowel function or spontaneous flatulence. This, as will be seen, is no longer
a valid test for when a patient should be given an oral diet. The search for research was conducted both manually and electronically. Electronic databases are extremely valuable for
