Early European/Native American interactions were characterized
by misunderstanding, resentment, and injustice. Columbus is the European most often credited with first contact with the Native American peoples, peoples who were at first fascinated by the new
arrivals to their shores and then infuriated. The Europeans had very defined goals in regard to the so-called "New World" and the well-being of the Native inhabitants of that
world was not a pressing concern in attaining those goals. Columbus, of course, lived during the golden era of Portuguese exploration. He
was first employed by a Genoese mercantile firm as a sugar buyer in the Portuguese islands off the African Coast. It would be through this employment that he would
first encounter the belief from other pilots and navigators who believed their was land further to the west as well. Columbus came to yearn to sail to that land.
He dubbed his plan to accomplish that goal the Enterprise of the Indies. He sought financial aid first from Portugal then from Spain. It was Spain, and
Queen Isabella, who would make his dream possible. The first voyage would occur on August 3, 1492 and included the now-infamous ships the
Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria. The voyage and the subsequent "discovery" of the Americas would initiate centuries of problems between Native Americans and those peoples of European
