FINDINGS Early Childhood Of all the formative stages of childhood, the toddler stage can present the most challenging for parents. It is at this point when children learn to walk and begin to discover things they have not previously had the opportunity to experience. The range of age in which this occurs is relatively variable, because there is no set time when a child is supposed to enter this particular growth stage; however, the toddler stage is typically recognized the preschool period. There is no question the toddler stage is a critical component in a childs development, inasmuch as it represents the period between infancy and childhood where a significant amount of emotional growth takes place. Many a parent can attest to the fact that what society has termed "the terrible twos" is a time filled with innumerable discoveries that ultimately help to form the childs character (OLeary et al, 1999). During the toddler stage, every single incident that occurs is of great importance to the child; this is a time for considerable growth and learning, so it stands to reason that with the child a veritable sponge of curiosity, he or she will gather and retain a large percentage of what is presented. Even within the toddler stage, there are several individual periods of growth where one stage ends and another one begins; however, the time factor associated with such spurts is singular to each child.
