Young children are influenced by many factors in regard to the way that they learn. Interactions with others are among the most important of those factors. These interactions include formal interactions but probably the most important type of interactions in regard to early childhood learning are the informal interaction. Play is a particularly important element of these informal interactions. Play can influence all aspects of learning. This is true whether we are considering language acquisition or basic mathematics. Vygotsky (1966) contends that while play is not a predominant activity it is "the leading source of development in preschool years". A childs interaction with parents, other adults, and children can tremendously influence their cognitive development. Parents in particular are a critical element in language acquisition since the ability to communicated is a social, not just an environmental, component of learning. The importance of verbal exchanges between children and those around them is critical to language development. Parents play a vital role in the language acquisition and utilization process. This phenomenon has been examined by a number of researchers for different age groups. Bukatko and Daehler (1998) introduce the term "scaffolding" to describe the critical interaction between adult and child. They clarify: "scaffolding involves a teaching/learning relationship that uses the expert or tutor who intervenes as required and gradually withdraws as assistance becomes unnecessary" (Bukatko and Daehler, 1998, p283 ) The most opportune scaffolding which occurs between eighteen month olds and ...
