best matches with either the individual with whom they are working or the problem or issue under consideration. This scenario takes into account "staff members cognitive abilities, their level
of professional development, and their stage in life" (Caruso and Fawcett, 1999, p. 54). This perspective on supervision is based upon the ability of supervisors to successfully "read" their staff
members in order to discern which strategies work best with specific individuals and to shift from one supervisory approach to another as needed (Caruso and Fawcett, 1999). However,
this writer/tutors choice for a preferred supervisory style would be to employ the non-directive orientation described by Caruso and Fawcett (1999). This supervisory style is most effective with expert teachers
who "accept full responsibility for solving the problem," due to the fact that they possess "high levels of development, expertise, and commitment" (Caruso and Fawcett, 1999, p. 58). It would
not be as effective with teachers operating at the moderate developmental level, which may require either the collaborative or directive-controlled supervisory behaviors. Caruso and Fawcett indicate that in the
collaborative style, teacher and supervisors work together, with each person sharing the responsibility for problem solving. As this suggests, in the collaborative style, the supervisor takes a more active role.
Directive-control supervisory behaviors place the responsibility for the problem squarely on the shoulders of the supervisor. This style of supervision is probably called for with novice teachers who are new
