One of the most popular and most famous works is "The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass," a record which illustrates the life of one man as a slave and then as a free man. But, although many may think that Douglass work was one of the first, if not the first, slave narrative, such is not the case. Prior to Douglass narrative we were provided with "The Interesting Narrative of Life of Olaudah Equiano." The following paper presents this particular readers impression of this early black work. Discuss the main impression(s)you have about the experience of early Black writers Olaudah Equiano In first discussing Equianos work we examine one of the chapters which details a great deal of his experiences. In the second chapter of Equianos work he tells us the following, "I have already acquainted the reader with the time and place of my birth. My father, besides many slaves, had a numerous family, of which seven lived to grow up, including myself and sister, who was the only daughter" (NA). This offers us a simple, yet sad truth about the writer and the conditions of his time. Another intriguing aspect of the story illustrates how Equiano was not born into slavery, but rather born into a free society where as "the youngest of the sons" he "became, of course, the greatest favorite with" his "mother, and was always with her; and she used to take particular pains to form" his mind (Equiano NA).
