Two of the biggest events of this particular time was WWI and the emergence of the automobile and other products that signaled the age of mass-consumption. The following paper examines
these two issues. WWI In the beginning of the war the people in the United States were very determined to stay out of all conflict. In fact, at
the beginning of the war "President Wilson publicly and formally stated that the United States would follow a policy of neutrality" (The Social Studies Help Center, 2007). It was only
3 years later that such words seemed pointless (The Social Studies Help Center, 2007). During the war, prior to the involvement of the United States, the nation was heavily
on the side of its own allies, England and France, while they actively and openly offered up propaganda aimed at the Germans (The Social Studies Help Center, 2007). Tensions grew
and Wilson urged the American people to support, however they could, the allies in England and France because he recognized that they were culturally similar and because they were very
important trade partners for the United States (The Social Studies Help Center, 2007). "From 1914 to 1916 trade with the Allies grew from 825 million dollars to 3.2 billion dollars"
(The Social Studies Help Center, 2007). Clearly, if Germany won the United States would suffer economically because they would lose their trading power (The Social Studies Help Center, 2007). Two
