is seen to be a continuance to some of the action that was begun in Richard II. Now Henry is King and fighting a revolt against several fronts that have united against him. Against this backdrop is the story of a father and his son and their inability to see the true person inside of each other. In fact, it can be said that Henry IV, when he views the heroic deeds of his enemys son, Hotspur, he identifies with him more than he does his own son, Hal. Henry feels that his son hangs out with the most ridiculous types, is lazy and has no noble aspirations. Case in point is the robbery of Falstaff by Henry V (Hal) and his friend Poins at a local tavern. Meanwhile, back at the castle, Hotspurs brother in law, Mortimer has been captured and as a result Henry IV is demanding a release of the Scottish prisoners. Meanwhile, through a series of events at the tavern, Hals true character begins to be revealed to the audience. He is revealed as being fond of a bit of fun, but that he has a heart for the people who are his friends and for those in his fathers kingdom. It is established that he has mercy as well as wisdom. None of this his father sees. King Henry IV tells his son in scene ii, Act III, that familiarizing himself with the commoners will weaken his position as the future king, that they will not respect him. Basically, this is the age old tale of a son and a father not able to see the same types of characteristics in themselves. And of the generation gap rearing its ugly head.
