In recent months, googling "oil spill" will bring up a lot of hits tying to BP, its Gulf of Mexico oil rig Deepwater Horizon, and the explosion in April
2010 that unleashed billions of gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. The reporting over the summer has focused on BPs clear negligence and its inability to take responsibility
for the explosion (at least in the early going) and a general analysis of how much the company will ultimately have to pay when it comes to court costs, settlement
and clean-up. However, some of those who are pointing fingers at BP were only youngsters when another controversial spill took place in 1989
- that of the oil tanker owned by Exxon Corp., the Valdez, and the disruption caused when it crashed against rocks in Alaskas Prince William Sound, unleashing millions of gallons
of crude oil onto the beaches and in the water. More than 20 years later, the impact of that spill is still being felt.
And, more than 20 years later, the litigation surrounding the Exxon Valdez is still going on, with little end in sight as the oil company and plaintiffs continue battling
