In the case of Gibersons Glass Studio, glassblower Edward Englehardt Giberson, the proprietor had a great deal to offer - he had skill and lovely items to show for it. Problem was, his accounting books were in a mess, with his financial resources going downhill. He faced a certain closed business without help from Felicia Coates, who was asked to evaluate his processes then come up with recommendations. This paper will set up the scenario with solutions. Its based on a case study prepared by E. Richard Brownlee II for the University of Virginia. Executive Summary Though glass-blower Edward Englehardt Giberson had a successful glass-blowing operation in Charlottesville, he was finding himself in dire financial straights. Sales were strong, word was spreading, but Giberson was losing money hand over fist. Problem was, he couldnt pinpoint where the cash drain was coming from, as his financial records were in horrible disarray. An examination of his production volume showed that he produced around 40 batches of glass a week (out of which only a certain percentage actually ended up becoming saleable material). Further analysis showed that his fixed expenses of $37,305 per year far outstripped his sales of just over $31,000 a year (without adding in the variable costs).
