have supposedly created a computer which will react in fear when a threat is perceived. But does this make the machine superior to mankind? Does this mean that at some
future appointment in mankinds history, the machine will far exceed that most refined and sophisticated of all machines: the human brain? PROBLEMS: The student will wish to state that the
field of AI (artificial intelligence) has swollen over the last decade or so as new technological breakthroughs have presented themselves. Millions of governmental dollars are being thrown at these new
industries. Great potentials exist in the areas of medical diagnostics, manufacturing efficiencies, mineral exploration and retrieval, communications, space-exploration, to name just a few. However, the problems do exist. As
the program stands now, AI is in its infancy. Whereas the human mind starts small and grows larger, the AI mind is too larger and must be miniaturized. In other
words, the largest computers have had to be built to come close to the power of the human mind. However, the human mind is a greatly reduced size in comparison
to the super-computers which are needed to accomplish the same tasks. In order to rival the human mind, AI has to be able to work with less energy, less space
and quicker response times. So far this hasnt happened. BACKGROUND: Most experts state that the ultimate goal of AI is to build a person. "It should now be
clear that the difference, in intellectual terms, between a human being and a computer is one of degree and not kind," states Christopher Evans, author of The Micro Millennium(Evans 227).
As it stands now, a human mind is at its most basic sense a marvelous program which is fine tuned by experience and socialization. Computers simply havent this type of
