good. Men seemed to be confused as to how they were supposed to be, act, or think. In many respects, one of the largest factors of influence in the twentieth
century has been the media, and to that end, one can examine the ideas of masculinity as they have changed from the 1950s to the present day. Two films, All
that Heaven Allows, shot in the 1950s, and Far from Heaven, produced fifty years later, juxtapose these changes and shifts in the perception of masculinity. All that Heaven Allows, released
in 1955, starred Jane Wyman, Rock Hudson, and Agnes Moorehead. Jane Wyman plays a recently widowed woman named, Cary. She is different than most of her friends. She doesnt own
a television set, and she is locked into her respectability. Yet, the audience learns that she longs to be swept off her feet romantically. The story is ostensively about Cary,
but some pointed messages are being made about the men in her life and about men in general. Ron Kirby, played by Rock Hudson, is the romantic lead. Kirby shows
up to rattle and challenge Carys status quo lifestyle(Baumgarten, see also Sirk). Her husband has been a prominent member of society and as such, even after his death she has
his reputation. As such, she has made the acquaintance of a man named, Harvey. Harvey is boring, predictable and safe for Cary. He has the upper-class country club status that
she prefers, but other than that, she has no romantic feelings for him whatsoever. Kirby, on the other hand, is her gardener. He does not have the status, but he
